Excitement in Accra during the World Cup

History in the making. The first ever World Cup on African soil is half way. The atmosphere and the organization seem to be smooth so far –  if you like vuvuzela’s – , but it has not been easy for the African teams. Most of them will not make it to the second round.

Ghana might be the exception to countries like Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Cameroon. The atmosphere on Oxford street in Osu, Accra was on a high right after the first match against Serbia. The Black Stars did not disappoint their fans and won 1 – 0.

Meanwhile, street vendors in Accra are trying to make a little extra by selling World Cup trivia. No strict FIFA regulations here, opposite to what is happening in South Africa where street sellers are banned from the areas around the stadiums. These vendors seem happy with the extra opportunity.

Africa Interactive’s Esme Atsyornu and Isaac Eshun made these two video’s.
